The All-Star game is essentially just an excuse to give each team a break mid-season.

It's a promotional game, they pick a team of star players from each conference and then they play a exhibition game.

It's not real hockey, it's just for fun, more of a skills demonstration than a game, you might enjoy it,
Seems like an injury risk mid-season.
They don't play hard, it's not like a real game, it's more of a scrimmage, it's all razzle dazzle, it doesn't count so nobody plays defense, it's like pond hockey.
Sounds like an international ''friendly'' in football.
No hard tackles, unlimited substitutions and next to pointless.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Not even that, they don't really compete at all, they just skate up and down and do stunt plays, it's just for fun, it's more of a ceremonial thing, players consider it an honor, and it does actually add to their contract value, being an All Star is added to their CV, but it's just a show, it's not even an exhibition game really, it's a marketing event for the league.

It can be good to watch a friendly where there is no shirt pulling, constant fouls and diving. They do give managers a chance to try some different players and combinations but no one really cares.

PR stunt that is basically an excuse to give teams a mid-season break.

A friendly is still actual teams playing each other, this is not that, this just a gaggle of star players thrown together for a weekend of schmoozing and media events, they don't take it seriously at all, they're all out there joking around and showing off for the crowd.

Like it's fun if you actually go to the event, I went to the 2000 All Star Game in Toronto and I ended meeting all sorts of players and media personalities, so it was amazing that way, but it's boring in terms of watching it on tv

See, Calgary is an example of a team which is having trouble scoring in the regular season, but could be dangerous in the playoffs because they play playoff style hockey.

The Leafs are the opposite, they play regular season hockey, which is why they keep getting bounced in the first round even when they make the playoffs over and over.

I just watched a bit on youtube. Pretty dull. The skill competitions look a bit more fun to watch.
