Usually at a Dairy farm we expect 50% animals to be males and 50.% as females. Since the interest of a Dairy farmer lies in female calves, he is compelled to cull a male calf.
Since cow slaughter is banned in most of the states of India, farmers are left with two options. Either to raise these calves as draught purpose animals for work in agriculture fields or some may raise a better genetic worth calf for breeding purpose.
The changing trends brought about by advances in science and technology has replaced both these alternatives of calf rearing. Mechanization has replaced bulls as draught animal's in organized agriculture sector in most parts of India and With the help of Artificial insemination even semen of one bull can be used for insemination of thousands of cows.
Now the only option left with farmers is to cull these calves at a very young age, mostly weaning is done at 4months of age in rural conditions. Then these male calves roam free on roads owing to the lack of gaushalas and Other alternatives some also starve to death. At times we have cases of butting of pedestrians by the bulls .
A male cattle in modern times has no other use except for meat purpose, but owing to the religious beliefs and sentiments here it couldn't be slaughtered. Alternatively people must ponder about what happens to these calves after weaning, their welfare is severely compromised with no feed and shelter thy are left to die a horrible death.
Govt must improve the conditions of gaushalas and make proper arrangements for weaned and culled calves. In coming times a new technoligy of sexed semen (sex can be determined before insemination) which is yet in its infancy, can help in having more female and very less male calves ,which will help in tackling the problem of ill management of male calves.
