Washington D.C. is in a place that could realistically grow sweet potatoes, though. Even in Alaska you could grow them in green houses.
Hell, there is a guy growing a lot of citrus and tropical fruit in the Magic Valley of Idaho using geothermal energy to heat the greenhouse for free.
There's a Japanese greenhouse manufacturer running an experiment in Siberia where they are producing most of the tomatoes and a few other crops consumed by the local town there.
This is a poor argument because AOC is going to demolish it with the obvious response that every area should depend upon local food production as much as possible.
And the person writing this article doesn't seem to realize that Washington D.C. itself lies in the American South. It's surrounded by Virginia, the same latitude as Tennessee. They can grow sweet potatoes just fine.
