Hitler explains the motivation for it in Mein Kampf, (frankly amazing everyone acts all clueless about it.)

When WWI ended after the Germans signed the armistrice Hitler noted how England didn't quit blockading Germany which caused over 100k of his countrymen to starve. Hitler wrote about this in his diary. He said he never wanted it to happen again which is why he gunned for Ukraine.
That makes no sense. He had all of France and most of central Europe to mid Poland. That's plenty of breadbasket without taking on the USSR.

On the face of it no. Germany didn't have the fertile land mass to support it's population and neither did France or England. They still don't and never will. Europe has never been a bread basket.

It may be a lot of farmland but it is also a lot of mouths to feed.
Ukraine had the land but with a population of ''subhumans'' that he was happy to work and starve to death.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Ukraine propped up the Soviet Union in the face of starvation. Ukraine is kind of a big deal.

France does have the capacity to feed itself, it is a net exporter of food.
England never was but Germany was never really close to conquering the British Isles and taking our land anyway.

I disagree. Maybe France has improved their centralization of food production since then but the revolution kicked off after years of drought and famine.

I think Western Europeans are not able to produce the food needed to sustain their population. Not then, not now, not ever.

You can produce food pretty much anywhere using greenhouses. It's just a technological problem. The economic side of the problem is that the food is going to be more expensive that way.

That raises an interesting question I've never heard addressed: Did Germany redirect Dutch & French agriculture to their own needs during the Occupation? Less brie, veal and wine and more wheat, potatoes and sausage? And why was genocide off limits for non-Jewish Western Europeans? They killed quite a few anyway.

No, Germany was not interested in persecuting their cousins. They weren't in the business of being tyrannical dictators.
