It's no boot on my neck.
I have absolutely no intention of organising a gathering of people that increases the opportunity for a dangerous virus to spread.
I'd like the reproduction rate to be low enough that I feel safe to visit my 80 year old mother this Christmas.
I don't know how many Christmases she has left.

I think at this time of year it’s appropriate to think about the hundreds of generations that sacrificed, bled, and gave for me to be here. Thousands of direct ancestors who never stopped caring for their little ones, their gift to the future. Their legacy to an uncaring world.

Every single one of them contributed to your survival. Every one of them sacrificed to bring you to this moment, this life.

As my children watch a Christmas movie about a bearded man that gives them presents on our flatscreen high-def television, beamed over a global network of electrical impulses, I reflect on my ancestors. Huddled in the dark around a warm fire, telling their children - also my ancestors - wonderful stories about goodness and hope. That the world isn’t all darkness and fear. That things can be better and brighter, and love will always exist.

Be better for your children. Be better for their world. Give them the image of what could be, and what should be.

And most of all, have a very merry Christmas.
