Very Cool................ I'm pretty sure those Limeys made it so quick because they were low on booze.
They were quick because the first tea of the year from China earned a premium price. They were faster than the steamers of the time but because of their wide berth they could not use the newly opened Suez canal which eventually meant they could not compete.
Also racing is fun.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Just to clear things up, this kind of trader sold meat FOR cats and dogs, not meat from cats and dogs. It was typically horsemeat and other meats that were deemed unfit for humans. It was often dyed to prevent mixing by scrupulous people.

Wouldn't want to be sat next to Madame Curie. She used to carry radium around in her pockets. Her notebooks are still radioactive now.

Nah.

Oxford in that time had Wittgenstein and Alan Turing hanging out. Imagine being able to sit down and listen to those two guys carry on an informal discussion. Aside from them, you guys had several other great minds there.

Really, the ultimate group would be Einstein, Tesla, and Alan Turing.

But I also think people greatly overestimate the intellect of the physicists of that era compared to the mathematicians. Yes, it was THE golden age of physics, and those guys were incredible, but mathematics was even more so in those days, including the nascent field of computer science.

We had great physicists (mostly people we brought in from the continent after the rise of national socialism). England though.. man.. they had some great mathematical intellects.

50 years from now we will be looking at photos from Europe and discussing how enlightened and modern Europeans looked. Not trying to troll by Euro brothers, but that's the direction you are headed.
