so like a lolb that doesn't really believe in anything. I would disregard his warning about not letting it be co-opted.

OWS was co-opted pretty fucking quickly. I'd say it's a valuable warning.

A lot of it sounds right, but dang, half of us must be outside that age line. :( The ones I like there are pretty much the classical liberal ones, but I'm probably a bit more religious than his descriptions proscibe.

I tend to think his age estimate is off too. I would think Gen Xer would be the middle part of the curve

H/T on the age issue.

I'm pretty much with you, I'd say in about the 90% range

Two problems:

(1) He's basically engaging in the kind of narrative-building that makes it so impossible to discuss anything honestly any longer. It's not deliberate. We all risk falling into this trap, especially in our time. Basically, we spend a lot of time defining conditions and concepts upfront in order to build a kind of rhetorical or logical model of the world. To work well, it has to be intellectually pleasing at some level. Then we spend all our time just discussing the relationships between the concepts of the model rather than the real world. The danger here is that we risk spending all our time arguing over nuances in in an intellectual model that has no bearing on reality.

In this case, his model is so specific that it doesn't even cover a large plurality of the population. So even if a person with those attributes is likely to subscribe to some new ideological bent, it wouldn't say much about the entire polity, much less how we can manage to change anything.

Essentially, the narrative-building trap leads us to spend more time obsessing over the model than trying to see if the model matches reality. You can usually spot it when a person has to being with a ton of redefinitions of common words, but also in the establishment of an exemplar. I am not trying to be mean about item (1). I fall into this trap all the time too. I think it doesn't help you to actually solve problems, though.

(2) When people use these attribute lists to define some exemplar in their narrative, they almost always describe themselves. This is like a philosophical Mary Sue argument. It sucks. Sorry.

It's like saying, "hey, you're like me in these special ways? We are the new thing, man!" No. You have to show me how those attributes we share in common make some distinction with respect to the political discourse or issues playing out in the government today. These attributes don't really make any distinction like that. Your gender makes a greater distinction than those things since it can literally lock you out of a better education or even a better job due to affirmative action policies. Your gender can result in you receiving far more punishment for a crime than the other gender. Your race makes a similar impact.

Do you know what doesn't really make a distinction? Like half the shit on that Mary Sue list.
