Going to Florida

Post by DrYouth » Sat Jan 14, 2017 12:54 pm

Taking the family to Florida in March.

Going to visit the in-laws (Snow Birds) in Englewood... an hour south of Tampa.
We've been putting this off for a while... but the time has come.

Any advice?

I have only been to the Hollywood area (which was the other side of the state) but it was close enough to make a 1-2-hour drive to Miami/South Beach (which was well worth it, IMO), way back in the day.

As far as I know, Tampa is more closer to the tip/west side of Flordia.

If you bring a camera can you take a picture of those green lizards that were everywhere? I mean that is what I literally remember the area was being infested by them and I could swear they were just taking over the place.

St. Petersburg is nice. Just north of Tampa. Avoid Tampa it's really dumb. Unless you want to check out Z Fever Automotive because you love Nissans.

Keep going until you get to Miami.

Oh wait... you have kids; never mind.

Maybe, I have to find some old files and see if that was it. Either way the place was littered with them.

Anole

Used to catch them when I was a kid.

There are other kinds that stay more outside the porch area in the woods that are even more interesting.

Six line runners were the hardest to catch.

These were my favorites:

I never saw those while I was down there. I only remember seeing these green lizards that were everywhere- I mean everywhere. The place where we stayed had them literally going up to the pool and were all over the city.

Anoles like to live around people. If you have a screened-in pool area, you will have them everywhere. Most people like them. They are good to have around that area to clear away insects.

Guys like the fence lizards live out in the woods surrounding your house. Where I grew up, they used to love climbing around in the old railroad ties along the driveway. They like logs and dried up pieces of wood to climb in. I guess that's why they are called fence lizards. They are not as easy to catch as anoles (which for whatever reason often don't really worry much about people), but they are not difficult to catch either.

These little guys are called six line racers. They are pretty tough to catch without a trap of some kind.

FYI.. if you want to lure in DB or Average Joe, just bring up the fauna of our youth. Boys who grew up in Florida had it made.
