Keeping them both maximizes your chance of winning in both windows, but if you don't win in one of those windows, you could have better maximized your chances of winning a cup by increasing the chances of winning in one of those windows. Straddling the fence results in a shortened long term window with a lower percentage of chance of winning once in that window, and lower chances of winning in the short term window.

I don't think the Leafs are good enough to win in both windows, they could if the start line up, but that happening is extremely unlikely, and it's a huge gamble to straddle the fence trying to do so. That's what Harold Ballard would do, don't be Harold Ballard, Kyle.

Marc Bergevin tries to win now when he can't win now and has to rebuild sooner or later. The Leafs on the other hand don't try to win now when they can win now, while simultaneously not maximizing their chances to win later, to try and have their cake and eat it too, big difference.
