Because they go track meet in OT, so either they win or they lose in OT.

Even still, The Avs do that too, usually to their detriment and they lose in OT, but they've still been to two shootouts this year.

The Leafs are more extreme when it comes to huge offence and no defence.
They either score, or it comes right back down their throats, Freddie Toskala.

The Avs defense 3-on-3 is non-existent, this year's Avs are the worst 3-on-3 overtime team that I've ever seen. If it even goes into OT, you might as well just write the game off as an OT loss for Colorado.

If the Avs miss the playoffs, which is fairly likely, the biggest reason will be their performance in 3-on-3 situations, was so damn pitiful.

The Leafs will win every OT if they score early, if they don't, Andersen will whiff on a softie, there is no shootout.
