That battle scene was fucking beautiful.
The allusion to Cannae was just awesome. Its like D&D listened to Punic Nightmares before writing that scene.

I watched the episode fairly late and night, and I was so fired up afterwards I couldn't sleep for a couple hours hence

Isn't the issue with deus ex machina that something comes out of nowhere to get the writer out of a corner they wrote themselves into without proper set up?

When Tywin saved the day at the Battle of the Blackwater, we knew he was on the move, When Littlefinger saved they day at the Battle of the Bastards, we knew he was coming. See what I mean? Just because someone had awesome timing and rode in to save the day doesn't make me look down on the show, they set that shit up pretty well, when they went to that well, and both of those particular episodes are some of the best GoT episodes period.

You are going to have to be a little more specific, not sure what you are getting at.

The scene where Yara promised Daenereys that her peeps won't steal and rape last season.

Yara had no leverage to argue, Danny has always been a softie, if she dies, it will be her undoing. Like Olena said she's got to be the dragon, making the people love you is a fools errand, kindness is not rewarded on GoT, it's a cruel world. They need to stop fucking around and get down to business, or Cersei could pull of one hell of an upset with a lot of luck, at least Cersei isn't a softie.

Cersei issue is she has to flip some people who she has already burned her bridges with, or she's dead, for sure. Flipping Euron, Sam's Dad, and likely Littlefinger isn't going to be enough to get the job done. Cersei has to flip Olena, Tyrion and/or Sansa, to even have a chance of success and good luck with that. Even then she probably needs great timing on the part of the white walkers because if the stars don't align, she's royally screwed.

Yeah, I figure Danerys will dick around with Jon Snow for a while, and fight the white walkers. Then Cersei will show up and spear one of the dragons. All hell breaks loose.

If a ballista kills more than one dragon, I'd be shocked. More likely it badly wounds one, or she only kills one, that's about the best Cersei can hope for. Dragons usually aren't stupid in fantasy fiction, they aren't all going to fly right into that trap, maybe one of them gets caught so the rest learn the lesson, but after that the element of surprise is lost. They showed that scene to make us think Cersei is more likely to win than we thought, that's pretty much what all of the last episode was about, don't count Cersei out, Danny is no genius and she might not have the stomach to take the throne.

Jamie kills Cersei to save Tyrion, or will it be Arya?

Also, as of right now its women in charge of everything. Khaleesi, Cersei, and Sansa in Jon's absence. Yara and the Sand Snake lady from Rome were in charge until Euron took care of that. Old lady from Avengers is in control of the South

Arya will continue to play a huge part somehow

It was her wolf, I just think they chose to make it not corny

That wolf will play a role in the future though, I'm sure
