It's not just the super rich, there are lots of people in the Altered Carbon universe who are backed up beyond a single stack, the super rich are just super duper backed up many times over.brewster wrote:Didn't read the books, but the lack of backups of a little disk for all but the superich seems implausible.Smitty-48 wrote:Netflix has an Altered Carbon adaptation, Richard K. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs trilogy, not bad actually, they don't stay absolutely loyal to the book, they change it up a bit for the screen, but I'm a Richard K. Morgan fan and they haven't changed it in any way that bothers me, I kind of like the changes actually.

See, the technology in Altered Carbon is not human technology, in Altered Carbon universe they discover the remnants of alien civilization with artifacts all over, starting with finding some on Mars, and so they call them the Martians, this unlocks all sorts of new horizons technologically, but politics doesn't change so quickly, hence they can beam themselves into space on radio waves into stacks and sleeves, but the Yakuza and the Corporations and whatnot can beam themselves out there too, so it's like mid 21st century world projected into space by jury rigged alien tech.

Yeah, I got that part. I'm quite fond of a number of stories bases on found or stolen tech. It features in that series I mentioned, in Stargate, and in Niven's Known Space.

My favourite Richard K Morgan books are Market Forces and Thirteen, more near future dystopia, but I like the grittiness of the Altered Carbon universe too.
I mean, Morgan is a Scots Bolshie, so all his stuff has a lefty wefty bent to it, but, generally, most dystopia does, lefties being the doom and gloom depressives that they are.

All this Return to Normalcy has got me on a Roaring Twenties kick, so I'm watching Ken Burns Prohibition.
While drinking of course.
