I use to love the "idea" of California. The weather, topography, aesthetic, and the dream etc. I now realize that while most things start there culture wise, most things that start there are decadent and therefore rubbish for the most part if not down right subversive. I still pine for the Mediterranean climate...

Rather loose use of the word "happy" there Milspecs.
From reading StAs posts I would say he was far from happy.

I am sure the many people living in filthy, violent Yankee cities are the paragon of happiness. When I think back on armies of welfare dependents burning down or destroying city blocks, I think of a truly happy people. After all, what can possibly make you happier than spending each day dodging HIV needles, human shit, and hoping you do not get raped and robbed?
