Re: Literal Odds and Ends
Traditional Swedish cattle herding call called Kulning. Common in Dalarna, Hälsingland, east Värmland, to gather animals every evening at yearly summer farm. May have existed since bronze-age, still going on some.
The summer farm was a place higher up in the mountains/hills. Not hospitable in the winter but with lots of good grazing in the summer. The farm girls accompanied the cattle up there and stayed there for months.
The cattle roamed free but were called back for milking like this.

Looks like a really comfy fire hazard..Nukedog wrote:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/KotatsuA kotatsu (炬燵) is a low, wooden table frame covered by a futon, or heavy blanket, upon which a table top sits. Underneath is a heat source, formerly a charcoal brazier but now electric, often built into the table itself.[1] Kotatsu are used almost exclusively in Japan, although similar devices are used elsewhere: for example the Spanish brasero or Iranian korsi.

News stories are starting to match patterns in SF novels.
That extra solar asteroid that is buzzing through our solar system on a hyperbolic trajectory to some other part of the galaxy turns out to be shaped like a cigar and is rotating. It's literally the opening mystery to the plot in Rendezvous with Rama.

Simultaneously, people around the world are describing loud sonic booms that do not correlate well with military activity.
