limited resource.
One could also make the same argument about healthcare and endemic diseases as well..

So is national defense, that's not the point.
Literally everything is a limited resource.
I'm signing out for book time; we'll discuss later.

Haha. You should tell that to the residents of my grandfather's Ukrainian village, where there were separate fire brigades by and for the Jews and the Goyim. Do we benefit when our neighbor's house doesn't burn down? What about when his kids get educated, or not get Polio?Fife wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 6:07 pmFire protection isn't a simple case, and I'll have time for more on it later. For the time being, consider the benefit your condo receives from the fire being put out in mine on the other side of our common wall. Fire is like an enemy bomb or chemical attack in many ways; it doesn't naturally contain itself to one piece of property.
We are only accustomed to dealing with like twenty online personas at a time so when we only have about ten people some people have to be strawmanned in order to advance our same relative go nowhere nonsense positions. -TheReal_ND

Re: Socialism
Here's a decent post on the excludable/non-excludable issue: http://sex-drugs-economics.blogspot.com ... -good.html
Excludability for fire protection for a rural homestead, a quarter mile away from the nearest neighbor, is substantially different than for a condominium with multiple properties in a single building. It depends on the size and nature of the "public," or the "club" in question.
Here's another interesting post on the history of fire protection and the "nirvana fallacy" that popped up: https://www.econlib.org/library/Columns ... yfire.html

Re: Socialism
Wow this thread has gotten wonky... down an economics definition rabbithole...
Perhaps we can return to where we left off prior to this review of economics textbooks....
Capitalism does Military, Fire Protection, Public Utilities, Health Care, Public Transport/Roads poorly when left to it's own devices.
Socialism does Consumer goods and many other things poorly when it is the dominant force... even the above all by itself...
The marriage of Capitalism as a dominant force, with Socialism as a partner limited to the above areas... has seen the best results...
Socialism alone with Capitalism (free markets) suppressed has been an unmitigated disaster over and over again.
All of the above work only with healthy liberal institutions of democratically elected government held in check by other institutions such as an independent judiciary etc.
SO HOW DO THESE ECONOMICS CHARTS ALTER THE ABOVE PROPOSITION?
Do the laws of supply and demand change our social decision making because the government getting involved in a limited resource of fire fighters will throw off the supply and demand curve... and give your economics professor an ulcer?

I read your stuff, Martin. I just have doubts about whether you would like to discuss critiques, &c. Which of your books are you talking about?Martin Hash wrote: ↑Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:15 amI have a book on the topic but I don't think Fife's going to read it?
