What show are you watching right now?

The trouble now is that there are not many great shows, just a lot of good ones. Like, television execs have worked out a formula to make a good show and now they all follow it, but there's only a couple of shows that have come out in the last decade that truly rose above the mold. Beneath them, there's about 6-8 shows at any given time that tie for quality. Its very strange, and I don't understand why this is. Even good shows feel very formulaic most of the time now.

There is no Top 5 show of all time currently on TV at the moment this is true, and a lot of really good shows that will make the lower end of the top 10 and top 15. I don't think that is such a big problem though, because the depth is there, and top 5 shows don't come along every day.

If you think that is what The Wire is, then I feel sorry for you. Even people who hate cop shows love The Wire if they've seen it, and that is yet another show that you only punish yourself by not watching. I mean not watching The Wire is much worse than not watching The Leftovers, I take back that not watching the last two seasons of The Leftovers will be your worse ever TV watching decision, because clearly you just make a lot really bad decisions when it comes to which shows to watch and which shows to pass on. Yet you watch Game of Thrones and bitch, while turning your nose up at The Wire?

The wire is about as polar opposite of cop porn. The writer is a hardcore liberal. Whatever you are watching right now, STOP and watch the wire. It has been ten years since it ended, and I have never seen a show that comes anywhere close in terms of quality. Capps and I debate what the second best show is all the time, but in my opinion there isn't even a close second. The show isn't just about cops, and often the cop aspect of the show is the least interesting. It covers an entire city. The schools, the ports, the drug dealers and their plays (the most interesting part), the politics, the media, and the police department. The guy spent 17 years as a reporter for Baltimore, and it shows. He understands how the city works, and it is very clear with the writing, which is unsurpassed by anything I've ever seen on tv. Its really more like a novel or something. You would undoubtedly enjoy it dude. I cannot recommend this show highly enough. I got my sister to watch it and now she wants to talk about it all the time.
