Hard not to love Ridley, he is a genius, but his Magnum Opus is Blade Runner.
Aliens however was Cameron, also a genius, but his Magnum Opus is Titanic, love it or hate it, it is none the less a masterpiece.

The rare case where the movie was better than the book, much as Dick is still a genius, it wasn't his best book.
My main problem with the difference between the novel and the film is that the film makes the androids out to be victims, and the novel had a real purpose in making them into completely uncaring machines. Dick was writing really about actual humans he noticed that seemed to operate like they are running a program. In a way, he was the originator of the NPC meme, but in his case, he wasn't just talking about annoying behavior but psychopathic and destructive behavior. Like the bureaucrat taking human life because that's how the system is, it's not his fault. We see this all the time in the VA system, for instance. "I'm sorry, sir, it's the policy.." as the man is slowly dying from ball cancer or something like that.
Heat and Mohicans put the guy near the top. Even his later less memorable stuff like Miami Vice and Public Enemies were pretty good films. The man knows how to film a good gunfight. Never been in one myself, but I've heard that the sounds are on point, and the actors holding the props actually bear some resemblance to real life. They don't fire off 500 rounds without reloading.
