The key to good game play is to have them pay attention to their positioning and movement choices each round.
Having opponents exploit weaknesses in formation increases strategic thinking.
Also interacting wisely with characters that are neither hostile nor friendly can be suspenseful.
Finally stealth operations... where careful use of disguise, and stealth spellwork is key, increases dramatic tension.

Wow, that is fantastic, doc! Great family time.DrYouth wrote:I've restarted our family D&D campaign...
The kids are 15 and 13 now... so it's even more fun. My wife plays too... although admittedly she is less committed.
Their characters are level 5 now so they are ready for my favourite modules from my own childhood.
Up until now I was creating them myself... which was a lot of work... but fun.
We're on this one now.

Last module I laughed when the kids panicked in the stealth component of the mission and needlessly slaughtered some goblin cooks...
Panic set in...
It could happen to anyone.

Later... some skillful use of illusion and hold portal made up for these initial blunders...
And fortunately catastrophe was averted.

Re: What if the forum was a D&D campaign II
Yesterday's game crashed and burned...
The boy has a short attention span... and the module had a slow section...
The girl is naturally more cautious, spent a frustrating amount of time searching for traps and wanted to end the day early to replenish spells.
Actually this would have been a wise move... given what was coming up next... and the fact that they had burned through many spells trying to hypnotize, sleep and charm their way through the initial section...
However tempers flared and any hope of compromise or cooperation evaporated...
Sibling rivalry got the best of them... and as the family 'ruler' i judged it was best to abort the mission and wait for more favourable conditions.
I have to admit I was tempted to randomly sick a Beholder on them...
but... like any other family activity if you push too hard... everyone will end up hating it.

Just let them use their characters to fight it out.
.It doesn't have to be permanent record on their character sheets.

Have kitchen goblins capture the characters, and put them into a dungeon. Then hit them with this:
Or is it unethical to subject your own offspring to the Prisoner's dilemma in the name of science?
- "Your characters are arrested and imprisoned. Each of you are in solitary confinement with no means of communicating with the other. The goblins lack sufficient evidence to convict the pair of you with the principal charge of murder. They hope to get you both sentenced to a year in prison on a lesser charge. Simultaneously, the goblins offer each of you a bargain. Each of you is given the opportunity either to: betray the other by testifying that the other committed the crime, or to cooperate with the other by remaining silent. The offer is:
* If A and B each betray the other, each of them serves 2 years in prison
* If A betrays B but B remains silent, A will be set free and B will serve 3 years in prison (and vice versa)
* If A and B both remain silent, both of them will only serve 1 year in prison (on the lesser charge)"
Or is it unethical to subject your own offspring to the Prisoner's dilemma in the name of science?
"Hey varmints, don't mess with a guy that's riding a buffalo"

Anyone ever play with psionics?
I have to admit I've avoided psionics... and I plan to continue to do so.

Only makes sense in Dark Sun. Never played Dark Sun, but it could be pretty cool.
It could make sense in PlaneScape too, which is very fun.
