You really cannot reason with the environazis. Some of this stuff is more a matter of dogmatic faith than actual science and reason. They dress it up as "science!", but it's so much bullshit.

At the core of it is the same self-hatred and desire to snuff out humanity that lies at the root of every other Marxist ideology. Environmentalism is perhaps the most inhuman in that they don't reserve their contempt for human persons to a particular race or gender, but rather hate the entire species.

Two critical data points that will send them into a rage:

(1) Nuclear power is the most relatively green energy source that would actually run an industrial economy that we know of.

(2) Plastics are not bad, per se, and in many cases are the greenest alternative we know of.

A bonus data point: washing cloth diapers is far worse on the environment than just buying disposable diapers. These were some of the items of business this old dude from MIT taught us in that environmental science elective I took as an undergrad. Hilarity ensued, and these weren't even millinneals yet. I can't imagine the lulz that guy could have elicited if he were alive today. Great man. If you are still in college, do not hesitate to take courses for the really old guys who teach a couple classes on the side for their grandchildren's college fund or whatever. I am not kidding when I say we are in a dark age. You need to go back to before the boomers to get a sense of what we lost.

This is why you need legislation, otherwise everybody does just what the fuck they want and screw the long term consequences.
Maybe you should invest in reusable sippy cups if you haven't mastered drinking without a straw yet.

I wouldn't disagree with any of those conclusions but it is telling that they didn't compare the two products in terms of biodegradation. No mention of the consequences of plastics in the environment. Up to 8 million tonnes a year into the sea and no real idea of how much goes onto the land. If paper bags have a higher carbon footprint so be it, still better to not make single use plastic products. Just 5p on disposable bags in the UK has reduced consumption by over 85%. Everyone takes their own bags to the supermarket.

Europe is much better at recycling plastic than the States but we still only acheive 30% so 70% is going into the ground or the air or the sea.

All the plastic you see floating in those huge rafts in the middle of the ocean is nothing. 99% is on the sea bed. Upto 75 kg per square kilometer. All going into the food chain.
Paper? Gone in a few months, back to the soil.

Paper manufacturing is the third largest contributor to green house gases. You are like a child being distracted by the shiny keys, or in this case, the giant garbage islands created by Asia and Africa.

Look, the outlawing of straws, I agree is stupid but plastics is one of the worse things for the environment, in my opinion. You can plant new trees and make more paper, but with plastic, it comes from crude oil, coal, natural gas, and some other products but overall, it's considered to be a bad investment for throwaway products. Something that is supposed to be used only for one time shouldn't be plastic but something that can biodegrade on its own- like paper.
