Watched a Dirty Jobs episode, where Mike Rowe was helping to castrate sheep. They literally put the nuts in their mouth and tear them out.

He talked about the rubber band thing, and they told him that it takes weeks to recover, whereas having your nuts ripped off apparently only hurts for a few minutes. After that, the lambs are up and frisky again.
