It is fun to test your ideas and the way you think against people who are completely opposed to them. Sure, in the heat of the argument, no one wants to back down, but even if nobody changes their views, the argument really helps to crystallize the important roots of an idea, and reveal unseen effects of dogma. This slowly builds better ideas.
I think it is great, and I have really never had a bad exchange here... but I am also a spineless moral coward, so I don't get too upset when some one attacks my beliefs.
