More surface area equals more caramelisation and therefore more flavour IMHO.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

They get dry and squeaky. Try to grill in whole and you will discover something beautiful in the middle. Treat as a steak.

Slicing it in half and breadcrumbing it to make veggie burgers is very popular at the moment but I find it too squeaky prepared like that. I will try it the way you describe though as you never learn anything if you are not prepared to try something new.

BBQ'd cheese? Sign me up!

Where would a heathen colonist buy something like this?

Walmart sell it. It's 3 times the price we pay in England though. Lidl sell it for under £2.

One of our fav traditional appetizers for Thanksgiving is little baby dill pickles, wrapped in ham and cream cheese. :)

When I was younger I got a gherkin stuck up my nose. I didn't tell my parents, and pulled it out with tweezers.

Don't give up on beetroot. Boil in their skins (to retain the colour) then peel and roast, absolutely delicious and really brightens up a plate of food.

I've had them in salads, or pickled. There is something very weird and funky about them that I dislike. Too earthy or something. They look so goddamn weird too. Reminds me of that cranberry jello stuff that comes in a can on thanksgiving. It doesn't taste like that but it has a similar look about it.

Pickling is obviously going to cover the flavour of beetroot, you are mostly going to taste sugar and vinegar.

How about cake? I bet you would not turn down a slice of chocolate, beetroot and polenta cake.
