Nah, plenty of great land out there. We just keep it as secret as we can to keep the undesireables out. But those areas tend to have harsh weather that naturally prevents wimps from gravitating to them.

Important lesson: if you are in the water and you can see land, do NOT waste an incoming tide. Wait until the tide is going in, and swim for shore with everything you have. You have maybe 12 hours from the slack tide to get there, and then you are probably fucked if you don't make it.

At most, land, if you visually see it, is no farther than about 192-200 Olympic laps worth of swimming.

You can tell by looking for the Moon. If it's near the horizon, wait. Wait for it to move towards the center of the sky and then swim. That's your high tide.

Another important lesson: do not fly over the ocean in a single engine airplane. Derp.
