She seems nice.

It was later determined by investigators that the substance Werker threw was likely ground chicken dipped in antifreeze, according to police records obtained by 11 News.
The dog did not consume any of the chicken.
Werker pleaded guilty on July 9 and received a deferred sentence. She was ordered to pay a $250 fine to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
In Werker’s booking photo, she wore a black t-shirt with a black and white cat in the center.

Courts order her to pay a fine to some private animal rights organization, not the neighbour, whose dog she was trying to poison?

Yeah, it's crazy. Non-profit 'do gooder' orgs have made big inroads in the US gov as approved non-governmental organizations and partners. It's fucking insane. Like US courts and Law Enforcement listening to the Southern Poverty Law Center on which groups in America are hate groups and dangers, then targeting them.

Is that mostly a recent blue state, leftist phenomenon, or do red states have similar "arrangements" with their preferred non-profit orgs?C-Mag wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 7:12 amYeah, it's crazy. Red state generally just means less state. Consider the implication.

StA has it about right, less state is all. But since 9-11 Law Enforcement is more nationalized and interlinked than ever, so they tend to do the same thing and run from the same playbook.BjornP wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 7:18 amIs that mostly a recent blue state, leftist phenomenon, or do red states have similar "arrangements" with their preferred non-profit orgs?C-Mag wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 7:12 amYeah, it's crazy. They've been really quiet about this mercenary arrangement between non profits and government. What the government will do is just state...…….. ' according to studies, the Covington Boys are a hate organization based on violence'. Then go raid them using that as justification. Or like in the above case, funnel money to an approved group as part of a 'community service' type idea.

What they could have done is poison her old ass. I don't mean enough to kill her; just enough to make her sick enough to consider the IRL consequences of her callous and inhumane acts against an innocent doggo.
Maybe make her eat some English cuisine for a couple of days or something like that.

I'm mostly surprised at it being the legal system having the right to demand a private citizen pay some private organization money for their organization - especially when the case would indicate there already was someone else who ought to have recieved damages.
The whole idea of "hate groups" is weird. If they're not terrorists, they're just individual citizens commiting violence and should be charged as individuals. That NGO's are consulted on relevant issues, is preferable to only having government agencies making that decision, but the designiation itself should be something the group had a right to challenge. I hope they do.
Anyway, we have a similarly questionable government/private orgs situation here, too. It's just not the legal system and ngo's, but the unemployment office and private companies. Recieve unemployment benefits and you're eligible for being rented out to a place of employment as an unpaid "intern" for three months at a time (you have the option of picking who you want to intern with, before it gets decided for you). If the company promises to hire them on after another three months, they can get six months free work from the intern, paid for by the local government. Used to be six months free work, and companies didn't have to promise to hire the intern.

In America, "hate group" usually just means whites who advocate for white interests. Actual hate groups committing violence get protected by the state if they are non-white and their victims are white.
The legal system profiting their private interests and allies is just neoliberalism writ large.
