I played paladins back in the day. Never actually played a ranger.

Paladins are fucking awesome. It's a never ending battle against degeneracy and lawlessness.

Yeah, I'm switching to Avenging Paladin, and no more of this stick crap, I'm going with +5 Holy Avenger great sword.

Plus I have holy strike, valiant strike, and radiant smite.

To answer the OP:

As day 2 dawns on the MHF D&D ClusterFuck, there's a giant pile of bodies, and a heavily wounded Smitty covered in blood, and arguing with himself over magic rings. Several party members immediately fucked off and boarded a ship, then killed each other. The survivors are huddled together on the other side of the street, debating their moral codes and philosophy.

The townsfolk are horrified, and the local officials declare the area to be ridden with plague (mind-vapors).

That's cause there is no current threat to us. We are a dysfunctional family of fighters. With no clear threat we fight with each other, give us a threat and we bond quickly to take out the threat.

Nothing stops you from being a drunk ranger. You would be a pretty bad paladin. A drunk monk would be a fun character to play, though. Monks are an ascetic class that use mostly martial arts and unarmed combat, but have a lot of secret powers. A constantly drunk and offensive monk would be pretty funny.

When I hear Ranger, my thoughts scan past modern Rangers, Texas Rangers and Aragorn the Ranger. I think of Rogers Rangers and his well thought out rules.

I've never played Dungeons and Dragons, but the people I know who are really into it are also really into anime, comic books, and the big bang theory. All of that stuff is shitty beyond belief, so I have a strong suspicion that D&D is quite bad. Can't say for sure though.
