It looks like it has some really redeeming qualities though.

Very intellectual, really.

And edgy.

Rogue One is actually about internet freedom
Think about it

*Think about it*
And that’s why Rogue One, property of the Walt Disney Company, is actually a movie about internet freedom. It is a movie about data transmission as a political act, and one in which unequal access to bands of transmission puts people’s lives at risk. Star Wars knows what everyone in this country except three FCC commissioners knows: discrimination across data speeds is a form of censorship.

And while the end of net neutrality probably won’t lead to a giant space station blowing up the planet with a death laser, I’m not stoked to have to live in a world where I get to find out for sure.

Well, actually, the unlawful transmission of classified data in Rogue One would be primary mechanism by which people would be killed in the Star War, as, how many troops live on the Death Star? It's the size of a small planet, so every time these self righteous rebels blow a Death Star up, they would be killing millions.

Stormtroopers are people too. They're just doing their jobs, trying to bring peace and order to the Empire.

The Rebels were like the Mahdi, and Grand Moff Tarkin was like General Charles Gordon. The Empire Strikes back is like the battle of Omdurman.

Every time the rebels go to war against the central authority in the galaxy, the whole place goes to shit, everybody's living in squalor and chaos, it's a cosmic disaster area, I've never sided with the Rebels, I've been on Lord Vader's side from the beginning, peace and order in the Empire, who overthrew the Republic? Vader tried to save it, then the Jedi stabbed him in the back.

Amusingly enough, in the newer flicks, it seems like they go to great lengths to explain why the new Empire, whatever it is called these days, is so terrible.
In the rip roaring 70s, it was enough to just have an Empire, call them evil, and just let the audience get on board with the cause. These days, you really gotta hammer on the reasons why the Empire is the bad guy.
The world, it would seem, has finally caught up with your love and appreciation for legitimate authority.
HAIL!

Her needs America so they won't just take his shit away like in some pussy non gun totting countries can happen.

Vader is the real hero of the story, first of all, he tries to use his powers to save the Republic, then when the Jedi turn on him, and chuck him into a lava flow, he then tries the next best option which is emergency rule to restore order, if the Rebels hadn't chucked him into a lava flow, Palpatine never would have been able to take over in the first place, and in the end, who saves Luke Skywalker and kills Palpatine? Yeah, Vader.

Never mind that nobody offs more incompetent and corrupt imperial apparatchiks than Vader, if they screw the pooch, sayonara force choke, jackwagons, now that's what I call accountability.

A reviewer happy with the story
The audience is completely captured from their own galaxy and thrown into this distant one, with its operatic narrative.

But what do we find once our surrender has immersed us in this distant galaxy, with all of its troubles, its wars, its suffering and struggles? A scene that's recognizably pro-vegetarianism; a sophisticated (and I would argue even academic) critique of the destructive, elitist principle of the Jedi religion; a feminist rejection of male impulsiveness and a celebration of rational, thoughtful female leadership; and a political economy that springs from the idea that much of the problems of this galaxy might be related to its laissez faire market (a distended military-industrial-financial complex, the casino ideology of the men and women who produce weapons of mass destruction, child labor as a consequence of the absence of regulation). All of this is in the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a film that may disappoint Trump supporters but will certainly be enjoyed by every other human in this galaxy. recommended
