Oregon Dems Eliminate High School Reading Proficiency Requirement
Gov. Kate Brown guts requirement that high schoolers prove they can read, write, and do math
Democratic governor Kate Brown of Oregon signed a bill last month that drops the requirement that high schoolers prove they can read, write, and do math at a basic high school level in order to graduate.
The bill, which the Democratic legislature passed in June in a mostly party-line vote, suspends Oregon's high school graduation requirements for at least five years as the state works to reform its high school standards.
A spokesman for the governor's office told the Oregonian that suspending the proficiency requirements will benefit "Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color."
Before the requirements were put on hold during the pandemic, Oregon high schoolers needed to show proficiency in "essential learning skills" to earn their diploma. That meant demonstrating basic skills in reading, writing, and math, which students could prove without taking a test.
The governor signed the bill on July 14 with no fanfare. The move went under the radar for nearly two weeks, according to the Oregonian, because Brown did not hold a ceremony or issue a press release to mark the signing of the bill. Oregon's legislative database was not updated to reflect that the governor signed the bill until July 29. Other bills Brown signed in July were updated in the database the same day she signed them. A state legislative information services administrator attributed the failure to issue a notice that the bill had been signed to a system malfunction.
The governor has not publicly endorsed or commented on the legislation.
Some school districts and states across the country have gutted standards for graduation and admission to advanced-learning schools. Last year, Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia eliminated the merit-based entrance exam at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School in the name of racial equity. Admissions of Asian students plummeted following the move.

Like ... I'd talk some shit about this dumbass idea ... but all the people I'm aiming it at probably couldn't read it anyway.

No doubt an idea birthed by the higher education industry. Business owners can’t even use a high schooler to count inventory, so it will now require a college degree.

Good Work Oregon
Immediate thoughts.
1. Seattle is about 6 months behind Portland on all this crazy shit
2. Flyover States and rural folks will still be presented as bumbling idiots in media and entertainment.
3. It will make the job market a true merit marketplace, where people who prepare themselves will have greater advantage.

People complain about the Boomers not giving up the good jobs.
But when the next generation complains about Gen X not giving up the jobs, we can simply respond with "Y'all can't read. You have o be able to read to do this job. Sorry. It's not a greed thing, it's a your-stupid-ass-is-illiterate thing."

How'd those meetings go ?
We must ensure more kids graduate. How can we get there. Work harder at teaching them............... Nah, Fuck that.
All we have to do is remove reading requirements.

Here's the part I love.
I'm the racist for being a white guy who believe in meritocracy, and
judging people by the content of their character not the color of their skin, and all that.
But the woke ass, anti-racist, Democrats just literally scrapped reading and math requirements in school because
"suspending the proficiency requirements will benefit Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.
Damn.
That's cold.

Reading is just a social construct anyways. Just like math.
At this rate China may just refuse to own us because we'll be too stupid and dependent on them to keep us alive. We won't be worth their trouble.

Just more evidence that those in this country who claim to be "anti-racist" are the most racist people in the country.

I’ve been saying it for years. A college degree will be the new High School diploma.

Right! Facts! We’re that last “normal” generation far as work ethic and self driven by personal goals.
