Oh, I'm definitely going to do all those things; I'm just not going to like it.

I repeat, the people of the Soviet Union still believed in Communism, propaganda is unstoppable, it's just that Communists couldn't make enough bread, that's why the U.S.S.R. fell. None of the people I know who are Communists (egalitarians who don't know the difference), are going to change their minds; it's just that eating will take precedence eventually.

Of particular interest are the book's personal accounts of dutiful Party members going through the motions of obedience as a means of enjoying their private friendships and lives. Joining the Party's machinery was a way to meet friends who you recruited for your committee work. Everyone went through the motions but nobody actually believed any of it: you did homework while "listening" to the endless canned speeches, you went out for coffee while telling the Party functionary that you were on Party business, and you worked on parades and activities that were a bit of fun despite the dreary official purpose which everyone ignored.
That reminds me of my wife's cousin who is a cop in China. He has to post out two pieces of propaganda (either pro-CCP or anti-USA) every day in order to get promotions. She said he doesn't even read them.

No idea why a US politician would want strong ties to a nation that tells it's police force it must post propaganda, and it considers anti-USA propaganda to be equivalent to pro-CCP propaganda.

The author of the book he cites seems to disagree. The vast majority of the populace were just playing along.

I agree that everyone recognized that it wasn't working, especially the hypocrisy, but they were/are still egalitarians. Meritocracy-believing Russians emigrated to the U.S.; they're part of the Trump bigrade.

If that was true there would have been very few people left in Russia. Most people just don't care one way or the other as long as they do not feel oppressed.

I’m not sure what you’re saying; Egalitarianism isn’t oppression, it’s just leveraged that way.

There could be an egalitarian society that actually made liberty the primary imperative, and allowed voluntary sharing so that everyone was equal; not probably because egalitarianism is authoritarian, but possible.
