Masihiya, Martin's Mystery Novel

I finished that book today. What a ride!

The story is about a lawyer who has to move to Africa because he acted in justifiable vengeance to a man who did something unspeakable. The lawyer starts driving a truck across the continent for a living and ends up with an ex-Liberian child soldier as his wing man who helps him more than once out of a tight spot. Finally, after traversing the continent, he ends up in South Africa, where he looks up an old (white) friend who he met in college in America. The friend gives him a job investigating a very tricky situation involving miscegenation, racial tension, and class conflict. Johannesburg's slums, bars, and brothels form a very atmospheric backdrop in this story.

The novel is really fast paced, and it also features quite a bit of Martin's philosophy and aphorisms. If you want to get a quick rundown as to why Africa is a shitshow, read this book. Martin covers Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), South Africa, and Liberia extensively, and gives a very solid and readable background on these places.

He also gives some very interesting takes on race relations in Africa, and the West's misconceptions about them.

C'mon you cheap bastards. We have all been mooching off Martin for free for god knows how long. Buy the damn book. It is like $10 on amazon.

It is worth your time, and has quite a few twists and turns. You will enjoy it!
