Have Videogames Run Their Course?

I missed videogames almost entirely; Pong came out just as I was looking for a wife, and then I was pursuing my own thing for decades (though I did write 2 videogames and worked for a videogame company for a short while). My kids barely played, and their friends, all Millennials, don't play. I don't hear about them all the time anymore.

And if they're going away, what's replacing them?

Not pretending to be with it any more (I used to know what it was, but then they changed it), it's all my son does. I send him outside as punishment.

You don't hear about them? You never heard of Fortnite or Minecraft? Video Game revenue is higher than Box office revenue. They aren't going anywhere just like movies aren't. The business models and distribution may have changed but the mediums aren't going anywhere.

Equating videogames to movie theaters is a good comparison. Movie theaters are an anachronism that continue because they must serve a niche market: 9 out of 10 times we go, there aren't more than a handful of people in the theater. (Just saw Ford v. Ferrari, crowded).

I know about eSports which may still be going strong, and Pewdiepie has 100,000,000 Subscribers, but how long can Call Of Duty sequels go on?

Call of Duty is one franchise and is an FPS, which is a declining genre to begin with. It's like asking if movies will still exist after the comic book movies are done. Games are moving from a sequel model to a live services model. Paying a monthly fee for updates or in game aesthetics. Movie theaters are declining while video games are ascending by revenue I make the comparison because where do you think people not in the theaters are? Esports are expanding, personally I am not a fan and the hubbub about them replacing traditional sports is hogwash, but it is foolish to ignore it as well.

What? Video games is not a fad everything you mentioned was a fad within video games and the industry moved on to the next thing.

Pong was a Fad .
FPS, like Call of Duty is a Fad.
Motion games, is a Fad.
Sandboxes are a Fad.

When they run their course they'll move on to the next thing.

The games never go away, the platforms just keep evolving.

Arcade to consoles to PC's to phones to VR prolly.
