Bezos v. National Enquirer

IN RE: The Compromise Offer About Publication of Jeff's Dick Pics

Fucking with the world's richest man? Newsworthy.

(N.B.: It is *not* obvious that AMI has engaged in criminal extortion or "blackmail" from the record so far. Having said that, Bezos doing some dick slangin (pardon the pun) is of more note than the slangin of just some average two-bit celebrity.)

No thank you, Mr. Pecker
Something unusual happened to me yesterday. Actually, for me it wasn’t just unusual — it was a first. I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse. Or at least that’s what the top people at the National Enquirer thought. I’m glad they thought that, because it emboldened them to put it all in writing. Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I’ve decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten.
. . .

Well, that got my attention. But not in the way they likely hoped. Any personal embarrassment AMI could cause me takes a back seat because there’s a much more important matter involved here. If in my position I can’t stand up to this kind of extortion, how many people can? (On that point, numerous people have contacted our investigation team about their similar experiences with AMI, and how they needed to capitulate because, for example, their livelihoods were at stake.)

In the AMI letters I’m making public, you will see the precise details of their extortionate proposal: They will publish the personal photos unless Gavin de Becker and I make the specific false public statement to the press that we “have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AMI’s coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces.”

If we do not agree to affirmatively publicize that specific lie, they say they’ll publish the photos, and quickly. And there’s an associated threat: They’ll keep the photos on hand and publish them in the future if we ever deviate from that lie.

I can't make sense out of it. Only I can think someone would do something like this is if he had nothing to lose or he did it to purposely get the type of response he is currently getting.

He did it so AMI/Enquirer doesn't have blackmail leverage over him for the rest of his life.

Yeah, but I am trying to understand what wtf AMI was thinking? Unless they had this prior to the announced divorce and were trying to leverage the billions Bezos would lose due to infidelity, I don't see how Pecker thought he could come out ahead here.

It kind of looks like it was not blackmail at all, but that National Enquirer parent company sent a letter to him telling him he needs to stop making false statements about them or they would sue. He went straight to the blogs and screamed blackmail.

I dunno.

I doubt they were blackmailing the guy. They stand to make huge amounts of money regardless of anything he does.

I got news for ya Jeffrey, she's not with you for your Dick.
If you really want to turn her on, take pics of stacks of cash.

I went to google and typed in Jeff Bezos dick pics as soon as I saw this. I wanted to save the pics on my computer in case my amazon prime subscription ever gets cancelled and I need some leverage to get it back...
