I don't normally read socialist rags, but this article by the Jacobin cracked me up, even though it inserted some nasty pinko commentary. I have no idea how accurate any of this is, but I thought I'd share it with the forum. Maybe this will bring Smitty out of retirement to defend "Lady Windsor" or whichever Royal he took a blood oath to grovel to.

As an aside, it is very odd and unhealthy how much Americans like the British royal family. We watch their stupid weddings, and glorify them, and feature them in our supermarket tabloids even though they are a bunch of bums who never worked a day in their life (or did a single productive thing for their country in at least 100 years). We have our own royals like the Kennedy's which is also problematic, but an American watching the royal wedding is a bit like a guy who broke up with his girlfriend years ago, but still checks her facebook page. It is completely undignified. Fuck your tea and taxes you dirty lowlifes.

I'm not totally opposed to Monarchies, figurehead monarchs in the 21st C seem a little silly. But if the Brits want to pay for a big family of freeloaders, good for them, it's their money.

No it isn't. They still owe us bigtime for WW1 and WW2, plus a bigass loan we hooked them up with after Suez if I recall correctly. We also let them come with us to Iraq in 2003, which we didn't have to do. They have always needed us when they get into a jam.

Indeed we went to war against mercantilism. It's rather fascinating how capitalism and liberty have been intertwined since then by certain interested parties post war.

Compared to the alternatives it's ok.
Same head of state for 66 years who has never really overstepped the boundary into politics.
Cost 69 pence per subject. Add security you could maybe double that.
Most of them serve in the forces, often active service.
