I have experienced several foreigners tell me this phenomenon is just Americans. One guy in particular, who had lived in Iran, Europe, and the United States, and had been through many other parts of the world in travel, told me Americans are just honest people compared to most other nations.

Do this experiment in Greece and see what happens. Or even the UK for that matter. I think Americans are just much more honest than other people. Probably Canadians are like us too, except the French Canadians.

Interesting. But they didn't drop enough wallets to collect good data. 12 wallets is not a sufficient sample size. They should have dropped at least ten times as many per city.

Agreed. I want a bigger survey as well.

Let's try it with $600 instead of $6.

Exactly. You can set this up to get the results you want pretty easy. Location probably means everything in this experiment.

That being said. Most people are generally decent people. Your example of capitol hill is a good one. That's a city that just takes, and produces nothing.

I'm curious, does it matter whose wallet it is for you? I knew a guy who found a wallet in a NYC cab full of $10k in Yen. He figured anyone walking around with that much didn't really need it, at least not as much as he, the starving artist, did. It was also the 80's when the Japanese were on top of the world.

To me, no. I admit that if there was $1,000 in cash in there it would be more tempting, but I know how upset I'd be to lose my wallet and how grateful I wuold be to have someone return it intact, so I would return to it's owner as found every time.
