I think tech companies are making a big mistake.

People are fleeing these places first chance they get. Amazon could build a huge campus somewhere in semi-rural Kansas, pay to move new hires out, pay them the same salaries Amazon would pay in Seattle, and I think they would see even more qualified applicants. Their taxes would be much lower too.

Use their charatable funds to build nice parks, etc. Put decent rec centers on campus for employees and families. Basically treat the campus like a military base.

TBH I was a tad surprised at NYC, though once they decided it was two new locations it made sense. But I agree, DC was a given, when they first announced a "HQ2" I heard Atlanta and the like and laughed, it was pretty much without a doubt the DC area, for exactly what you say - the lobbying power to cover their behinds.

Th one silver lining is knowing that the bottomless greed of Seattle City Council will be coming hard up against a revenue DECREASE as property values take a dive.

They've strangled the Golden Goose indeed, and now the eggs will stop dropping.
It's almost like Aesop knew something about human nature that the "enlightened" politicians of Seattle c.2018 didn't.

Rent is rock bottom in Detroit, but the homeless don't seem interested in acquiring nearly-free homes.
It's almost like they stay in Seattle for something better than a free house.
