Report: Amazon halts Seattle construction amid head tax proposal
Seattle leaders often argue that companies are blackmailing the city when they say they will leave town if a new head tax is passed. It will never happen, according to Seattle Councilmember
Kshama Sawant (literal, not figurative, socialist).
Amazon could be making its counter argument. It is halting plans to expand in Seattle, citing the head tax as the deterrent. The online retailer has planned new office space in Seattle, along with
up to 8,000 new jobs. But The Seattle Times reports that Amazon has told its developers it is halting its project to build a 17-story office building until after the Seattle City Council votes on its proposed head tax. That could happen sometime in May.
The company is also considering subleasing all office space in its Rainier Square Building. . . .
...At a Wednesday afternoon council meeting, Councilmember Kshama Sawant pointed out that the council voted to approve a $1.7 billion “vanity project” for hotels through the convention center expansion. That money could have been used for affordable housing, she said.
She would like the council to go beyond the proposed $75 million head tax revenue and get $150 million from large Seattle companies.
“I think we should hold the council’s feet to the fire to pass $150 million for affordable housing,” Sawant said. “….
When we are talking about $150 million from the largest businesses, I think even that much is pocket change for these wealthiest businesses.”
(Says the socialist providing zero jobs)
She speculated that Amazon could be on the hook for $20 million a year under the head tax, and that “
Amazon is perfectly capable to paying that, and double, and even four times that amount.” Sawant said that
Trump’s tax cuts have given Amazon a $789 million “windfall” which could pay its portion of Seattle’s head tax over 40 years....

... and that’s how socialists kill 8000 jobs and chase billions out of the local economy, all while shrieking that we should thank them for not doubling or quadrupling down.
Trump passes a tax cut and chairwoman Sawant immediately plans the seize the returns from Amazon to fund the economic boondoggle called affordable housing.
Thank you dim witted lefty city government for making us all poorer, you fucks.

I do wonder sometimes when Seattle implodes some day whether or not the cascades will shield Eastern Washington or not.
It will take a lot of effort on their part to keep e-wa in... without much in the way of spoils to be rung out of us.

Possible, but I don't see it being worth Seattle's time..
I expect that Spokane would be some semblance of a state that appears when ever the ebb and flow of civilizations changes course.
A bit like Burgundy or Bavaria.
That being said, it probably hinges on the dams. The hydro power, farming and maybe nuclear fail... then there wouldn't be much left to squeeze.

I like the idea of some kind of third way socialism that doesnt do retarded shit like this and is pro free markets. It would only require a little tweaking I think.

I found this statement from their city council to be head-scratching:
http://fortune.com/2018/05/03/amazon-se ... eless-tax/
“Seattle is a city of great prosperity that has experienced tremendous growth of its economy and population,” the draft read. “However, this growth and prosperity has directly contributed to the rapid increase in the number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.”
Growth and prosperity directly contributes to homelessness.
They are complaining about homelessness and the affordability of housing while doing things that could cost the area at least 7,000 jobs.
Isn't Seattle at $15/hr minimum wage too? They told us that was what the workers needed to live and yet their housing is still not affordable at that rate.

Yep.
They’re apparently unaware that rent control creates housing shortages, so they want to tax Amazon $0.26 per hour per employee so they can fund “affordable housing initiatives” (aka rent control) and fight homelessness (partially caused by rent control).
They are a perfect storm of leftist idiocy. Raise the minimum wage, Levy new taxes on businesses multiple times a year, and then act astounded that Amazon and the chamber of commerce would react negatively.
After all, as the socialist put it, “They can easily pay twice as much as they are now, even four times”
... or they could get the fuck out of King county and not go bankrupt.
Derp.

It just looks idiotic to you because you are paying monetarily and in quality of life. Someone is getting rich off of sanctuary city status and bringing in more hungry mouths, and it's not you.
I don't pretend to know how all if it works, but I can say it only works because Federal Tax dollars pay for us to keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

With all we know about the quality deep-thinkers we have in government, I don't see it as sinister. They aren't in a backroom planning all this. It's all floundering about in a 3" swimming pool pretending they are going to drown any minute and responding to that.
They just aren't smart enough, from what I can see.
Look at our House. Maxine Waters, Barbara Bachman - both sides of the aisle; idiocy is not in short supply.
Why are all the Gods such vicious cunts? Where's the God of tits and wine?

It’s misery-loves-company in a statewide scale. If gas station hipsters and purple haired Starbucks baristas can make sure no one earns more then them, and half of us are homeless, then they win. They get to feel like they have achieved as much success as everyone else, they get to complain about how they can’t possibly succeed beyond where they’re at because of “the system”, and they get to virtue signal their faux charity over how bad they feel about the “homeless” while simultaneously pointing out that they barely make enough to live and can’t possibly do anything about it.
Liberal utopia.
Everyone poor or on the dole, and “the system” holding us all down so no one can blame us for only working monkey jobs our whole lives. Plus we all feel so bad for the homeless. Someone should do something, but not us.
