A former Roman Catholic archbishop and cardinal has been dismissed from the priesthood after the Vatican found him guilty of sexually abusing minors in a sign of an increasingly hardline stance taken by the church.Theodore McCarrick, 88, one of the prominent figures in the church, was defrocked just days before an unprecedented global summit of bishops to discuss child sexual abuse is convened by the Vatican.

The Vatican’s move makes McCarrick the most senior figure to be removed from the priesthood in modern times. He will no longer be permitted to act as a cleric, and is forbidden to celebrate the sacraments except to grant absolution for sins to a person close to death. Only excommunication is a more severe punishment.

Pope Francis has approved the action as “definitive”, meaning McCarrick will not be allowed to appeal, the Vatican said on Saturday.
Next week, more than 100 bishops from around the world will meet in Rome for a four-day summit convened by the pope to address issues of sexual abuse and its cover-up.

It comes after a disastrous year for the church, with abuse and cover-up scandals emerging in multiple countries, and the pope being accused of failing to grasp the seriousness and scale of the problem.

Francis has sought to get on top of the issue. In December, he vowed that the church would “spare no effort” to bring perpetrators to justice.
Go Francis, best Pope ever...

Never stopped you posting about no go zones or Sharia law on the streets of London.

Francis is fighting the conservative cucks in the Catholic church who would rather cover up child abuse than expose it.
All power to him. Hopefully, there will be more like McCarrick who get removed from their positions.
Criminal prosecutions would be even better.

Dude. You have it ass backwards. McCarrick was a leader in what is referred to as the homosexual mafia, an extreme leftist faction that controls quite a lot of the curia and has compromised dioceses all over the western world. His sexual assaults and abuse were known. Pope Benedict removed him. When Francis came to power, Francis made this guy a bishop despite the evidence, and despite the warnings from Pope Benedict.

The sexual abuse scandal is 100% liberal Catholics refusing to acknowledge the danger of the homosexuals that have infiltrated the Church.

You are so blinded by bigotry that you are spouting nonsense and have no idea how retarded you sound right now. It would be like blaming Schindler for the Holocaust while praising Hitler's efforts to save the Jews. You are a fucking moron.

Yep, you are just another homophobic conservative Catholic smearing Francis because he's reforming the Catholic church.

You are a fucking idiot. Francis was the guy who gave this guy permission to serve as a priest again and then made him a bishop AFTER he was caught sexually abusing men and boys.

No evidence of that. Just unsubstantiated allegations from Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò.
Do you believe in the presumption of innocence until proved guilty in all cases or only when it suits you?

Vigano is from the conservative wing who conflates homosexuality with child sexual abuse and is campaigning for Francis to step down.

Vigano has himself been accused of a cover-up over allegations that he tried to quash an investigation into the former archbishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota, John Nienstedt, who was accused of misconduct with adult seminarians.

LOL What?

Pope Benedict literally removed him from being a priest for raping seminarians and Francis not only reversed that but made him a bishop.

These are not rumors.

In his testimony, Viganò claimed that in the late 2000s, Benedict XVI had “imposed on Cardinal McCarrick sanctions similar to those now imposed on him by Pope Francis” and that Viganò personally told Pope Francis about those sanctions in 2013.

Viganò claimed that Pope Francis “continued to cover” for McCarrick, and not only did he repeal the sanctions imposed by Benedict, but also made McCarrick “his trusted counselor.”

He claimed that McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, advised the pope to appoint a number of bishops in the United States, including Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, and Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego.

The former nuncio, who said his “conscience dictates” that the truth be known as “the corruption has reached the very top of the Church’s hierarchy,” called on Pope Francis and other Church officials accused of covering up abuse allegations to resign.

All those priests McCarrick recommended to become bishops are part of the homosexual mafia. They are a network of homosexuals and they are all covering up the sex abuse scandals. All the rapes and assaults are by homosexuals.

Francis isn't a reformer. He's complicit in it.

A whole lot of claims and zero evidence in that report.
I'll ask again, do you believe in the presumption of innocence until proven guilty or is it only when Republican SCOTUS candidates are accused of being a bit rapey that you take the moral high ground?

LOL. What?

McCarrick was defrocked by Pope Benedict for raping seminarians. That's not a rumor. That happened. Then Francis reversed everything. Now Francis is trying to cover his ass, and you -- like the precious NPC that you are -- are gobbling up that Guardian propaganda. When somebody points out to you the facts that the Guardian conveniently left out, your response is to disbelieve it.

This is why you are called an NPC, Monty.
