The Olympics are the only real sports on Earth. They are a victory for those who wish to see major international crisis' resolved peacefully in the field of athletics rather than through war and embargo. They allow diplomatic rifts to be healed in shotput and gymnastics, and show that despite racial and religious differences, man can be united as one people. The olympics are also a victory the towns that host them. Generally, the host country recoups its investment many times over, and gives many contractors an honest and transparent way to earn a living. Many of the stadiums, pools, and setups from the Olympics go on to serve useful purposes long after the games are over, as evidenced by Brazil.

There are a lot of people that would like to end the Olympics, and return to a state of mutual paranoia and Isolationism. These people generally like sports like hockey or football. These foolish pursuits show the parochial and intolerant nature of their fans. There are many reasons why the Olympics are better than hockey:

1. Hockey is not an Olympic sport. There is not and has never been hockey teams in the Olympics, and for a good reason. Olympics sometimes happen in the summer, and hockey is a winter sport. The caliber of hockey players is also such that they could not compete with Olympic athletes in any meaningful way. Usain Bolt can spring far faster than John Stamkos.

2. Hockey has no place in a rapidly warming Earth. With global warming melting ice caps, many countries that enjoyed hockey will no longer get to play it. Sure, indoor stadiums exist with climate controls, but the energy costs associated with maintaining them make that quite prohibitive, to say nothing about the insane carbon emissions that would be required to keep the ice inside them frozen. How could anyone justify keeping an expensive stadium open when most of Africa lives on less than $3 a day?

3. Hockey is elitist. Its not fair to African or South American countries that cannot afford hockey sticks, ice skates, or goals. They are sidelined, watching their northern and often white neighbors play a game that excludes them. This is wrong. A compromise we can all reach is soccer. Its rules are very similar to hockey, and it is more thrilling to watch. It is a far more inclusive game, and lets everyone play. Even the poorest villages can afford a soccer ball.
