US Life expectancy is down for a second year

Post by Hastur » Tue Jan 02, 2018 2:41 pm

The US is sick. Very sick.

Compared to unemployment some numbers are hard to fake.

Health researchers have some grim news for Americans: We are dying younger, and life expectancy is now down for the second straight year — something not seen in more than half a century.

One undeniable culprit is the opioid epidemic, which is cutting down young adults at alarming and increasing rates, the researchers say.

The numbers are “disturbing,” said Robert Anderson, chief of the mortality statistics branch of the National Center for Health Statistics. The branch is part of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released two reports Thursday. One focused on all causes of death and the other zeroed in on drug overdose deaths.

A baby born in the United States in 2016 could expect to live 78.6 years, a decrease of more than a month from 2015 and more than two months from 2014. That’s the first two-year decline since 1962 and 1963 when spikes in flu deaths were likely to blame, Anderson said.

Before 2015, the last one-year decline was in 1993 and was attributed partly to the AIDS epidemic.

From a very selfish standpoint, isn't this kind of good? People dying younger is less of a drain on SS and Medicare or what have you. Playing devil's advocate for a second.

Grandma and Grampa aren't the ones doing the drugs. You need more young people employed to put a portion of their earnings into those programs to support the retirees and old folks. People in their 30's and 40's croaking from a Heroin OD is not healthy for our economy.

Old white people are killing themselves at an astounding rate; and death is the culture among the kids nowadays in lot of places as well.

What has the state given you, other than misery and death? Why do so many of us bitch and moan for even more of *that*?

I was obligated to spend a bit of time in my hometown over the holidays; I was excited and happy to GTFO ASAP.

There are a lot of things happening IRL that aren't going to improve American life expectancy figures.

Notice how a predominantly male issue is made gender neutral by the same news outlets that drum up fake moral panics over every perceived hardship of women.

I have inoperable cancer and I'm not complaining about life expectancy or asking you guys for donations. I wouldn't say no, but I'm not asking. Private message me for more info about my condition.

I noticed that as well. I can also report that while your MSM seem to blame it all on the opioid crisis over here the reporting is focusing more on lifestyle choices and social exclusion.

If the opioid crisis is an issue, in where people are dying from it, perhaps we are getting a reprieve in retrospect? Think of it this way, we are seeing people with addictive personalities die... a trait not best passed on if we are to remain strong overall as a species. It may be a cold and callous thing to say, but in reality, they are removing themselves from the gene pool and in the long term, we as a species would be stronger for it.

I know, the problem is to some that these are people that don't deserve to die that way, and although true, if we let nature take its course as it should, this was going to happen one way or another anyway.

By the time my son is in his teens, hopefully, this will resolve itself, but I still think as long as you raise your kid right, and keep them on a good path, drugs and other things of the sort will not be attractive to them.
