WARDEN - The U.S. Department of Justice announced that its fining Washington Potato out of Pasco and Warden $100,000 for immigration-related discrimination.
A press release from the U.S. Department of Justice states that Washington Potato Company, which operates the Freeze Pack vegetable processing plant in Pasco, routinely requested that work-authorized non-U.S citizens present specific documents to confirm their citizenship status, while verifying their authorization to work at the Freeze Pack plant, but did not subject U.S. citizens to such requests.
The anti-discrimination provision of the INA prohibits employers from subjecting employees to different or unnecessary documentary demands based on employees’ citizenship, immigration status or national origin.
“Employers must ensure that they do not impose unnecessary and unlawful barriers to employment based on citizenship status,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General John M. Gore of the Civil Rights Division.

This is why there won't be a reconciliation.
They think it's illegal to not hire illegals.
There's no middle ground.

I agree, but what is wrong with this? Its illegal to hire illegals, why should a business not be able to protect itself from being out of compliance?de officiis wrote:That’s not what they said.Okeefenokee wrote:This is why there won't be a reconciliation.

Yeah, there's no basis for a complaint here. There is probably more to this story.

Yeah, this is just local reporting so not sure what the rest of the story is, and unlikely to find out, but I took exception to the idea that its against the law to ask for stuff from none citizens.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Yeah, there's no basis for a complaint here. If the story said they ask more from people based on ethnicity that would be something I can see the government getting involved in, but based on what was written in the article....
You get fined for hiring illegals.
You get fined for trying not hire illegals.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
