Not at all arguing that the F35 isn't cheaper to operate and far far more capable than an old F4 Phantom, but all the advanced capabilities in the world aren't going to help your plane take down commercial jets before they fly into buildings... when your heavily armed planes are sitting on the ground because nobody is sure if the attack is real or a mock attack/simulation.
