They did, There was the Ender's Game adaptation, that Nolan movie, Valerian and Laureline, Life, there were some.

Ender's Game was a film adaptation of a novel published in the 1970s with two separate novel series following that have a HUGE fan base. There was nothing original about that (and they still managed to totally fuck it up, by-the-way). Batman v. Superman can hardly be characterized as original and, again, there existed a huge fanbase and multiple comic series based around the idea.

Think of the film Alien. That was a risk. That was original. Today it would be trivial for these clowns to decide to remake an Aliens franchise film, and they will make a decent profit, but it won't be original or interesting at all.
