Motel 6 Under Fire for Respecting Laws (calling ICE)

‘Leave the light on — for ICE’: Motel 6 employees reported guests to immigration officials

The Motel 6 budget lodging chain is commonly associated with its longtime slogan of welcoming hospitality: “We’ll leave the light on.”

But for immigration attorneys in the Phoenix area, the motel chain has become the site of a troubling string of immigration arrests. And according to a report published Wednesday by the Phoenix New Times, employees at two Motel 6 locations may have been sending guest information directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

After the story published, Motel 6 released a statement saying the practice was “implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management.”

“When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued,” Motel 6 wrote in the statement posted on Twitter and Facebook.

. . . and of course, huge backlash from progressives. You can read comments, or scn Twitter, but it's nothing new or surprising. They are furious, FURIOUS, that a motel in a border state would DARE alert the authorities when people from the neighboring nation are illegally crossing. THE OUTRAGE!

Pffft.

The market can handle this issue pretty well.

Most people expect peace and quiet from their innkeeper in exchange for their hard-earned shekels.

Motel 6 isn't doing itself any favors by re-branding as the Panopticon Inn.

Disagree. Most people don't want thieves rummaging through their vehicles in the middle of the night or to be exposed to criminals. Motel 6 made it clear that criminals are not welcome there. If you want the third world experience, then maybe drive a few miles down the road to book your night at motel la hacienda.

Most people who are on the lam, or in the midst of a criminal enterprise, would do well to keep a low profile, eh?
Like, probably a lower profile than advertising their criminal status to the businesses they're planning o hide from the law in.

But damn that Motel 6.

Tell 'em, Fife - if Pablo Escobar gives you $30 for a room you say "yessir" and STFU.
Because $30 is a reasonable fee to aid and abet any crime, right?

To be fair, if Pablo Escobar decided to stay at my motel, I'd shut the fuck up so that my family lives.

“We send a report every morning to ICE — all the names of everybody that comes in,” one front-desk clerk told the New Times.
Them wily illegals aren't exactly advertising their status.

If you aren't a criminal, then you shouldn't mind though, right?

I'm talking about a business decision by a low-rate motel firm. Not the Four Seasons, not even Holiday Inn -- Motel 6.

Is being the "see-something, say-something" provider going to help them get yuge market share?

Now, if you want to pass a law requiring innkeepers to act like banks have to act nowadays in snooping into their customers' business, call your Congressman I guess.

I really think somedays some of you all really do want to live in the Panopticon. Why are you all so shook the fuck up?

The most bizarre use of the "If you're not a criminal" argument I've ever seen leveraged.

"But if you're not a criminal then you shouldn't mind your information being sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement"?

You shouldn't mind even if you are a criminal - as long as you're a legal resident, right?
