US Destroyer T-boned - Again
First the USS Fitzgerald and now USS John S. McCain. Whats up with the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers? Are they known for playing chicken with large civilian ships or what? Someone please explain.

Maybe we're gonna find out these things have hackable navigation systems or something.
Also, maybe not.

Re: US Destroyer T-boned - Again
The most numerous surface combatant in the worlds largest navy, operating in the most densely packed heavily trafficked shipping lanes, just a statistical distribution. The US Navy spends more time at sea than any other navy, they sail more DDG-51's than any other type of ship, and they're sailing the shit out of them right now, in the China Seas.
Another factor may be that the US Navy doesn't have frigates anymore since they decommisioned the FFG's, so they have to use the destroyers for frigate duty, which is tight quarters, but destoyers are big ships these days, 7,000 tons, so it's a handful when you're ducking and weaving in the traffic off places like Japan, Korea, and Singapore.

Our sailors might not so good at actual sailing, but they are the best-trained sumbitches on the planet in diversity and avoiding microaggressions!

Sadly, sharks only traffic in macro aggressions.Fife wrote:Our sailors might not so good at actual sailing, but they are the best-trained sumbitches on the planet in diversity and avoiding microaggressions!

The Straits of Malacca are no joke folks, it's crowded down there
Not that it shouldn't be avoided, but the error factor is greatly reduced.

Collisions are more common than people think, most of them don't make the news, and the China Seas are like a freeway at rush hour, and guided missile destroyers are now the size of what used to be called a cruiser, so using those like a frigate is like using a cement truck as a highway patrol car,

Weatherman and Navy captains - two careers where you can suck at your job and Joe Sixpack will run to your defense because "Like, it's a hard job, maaaaaaan!"
Damn, I got into the wrong field.
I fuck up my job and *nobody* runs to my defense reciting the various hardships involved in my work.
Maybe I should learn to captain a destroyer, how hard can it be?
Oh wait - doesn't fucking matter, because as soon as I smash it up all my apologists will rush in to defend me.
