How's that Olympic Village Doing, Brazil?

Post by Fife » Sun Jul 30, 2017 11:21 am

Did the Brazilian guy make it here from DCF? I don't remember his name just now, but I do remember we had some epic Rio Olympic threads last year.

Anyway, enough happy talk-talk:

Rio's $700 million athletes village was turned into luxury condos but is now reportedly 'shuttered' and 93% vacant
Rio should serve as a warning to other countries about the costs of hosting the Olympics. The images of nearly abandoned venues have surfaced at a time when costs of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have reportedly doubled to $12.6 billion, up from the $6 billion that was projected when Tokyo won the bid in 2013.
But can you still get free rubbers in Rio this summer?

Guess there's not a lot of people in Brazil that can afford "luxury condos".
They'd probably be a big upgrade for a lot of the poor, but couldn't do that - they'll just let them fall apart until the plumbing is leaking, concrete falling apart, etc... Then maybe the indigent poor can move in.

Olympics are dying a slow death. Mostly due to the policies of the IOC.

What a coincidence, I just saw this in the local paper a few days ago.
L.A. is a virtual lock to host 2024 or '28 Olympics after IOC vote
http://www.latimes.com/sports/olympics/ ... story.html

The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday approved an unusual proposal to name two winners in the Summer Games bidding race between Los Angeles and Paris. Gathering at a meeting in Switzerland, IOC members unanimously agreed to the idea of awarding 2024 to one city and 2028 to the other.
..

At a time when numerous potential hosts have backed away, concerned about the billions of dollars required to stage the Games, it would behoove the Olympic movement to secure two strong candidates through the next decade.
Is this good for Los Angeles? Don't we have a high-speed rail to help fund?

What's missing from that article is the only bidders were LA and Paris. No one else is interested

Olympics never pay off for the cities that host them.

We'd be better off just building one permanent Olympic village in Greece and holding the games there every year. Maybe build another village in Switzerland for the winter games.

Yes they do, sometimes.
No we wouldn't.
What makes each games special is having a different host each time.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

That and the billions of dollars wasted over and over.
