•At 00:54 BST, over 4 hours ago, a fire was reported at Grenfell Tower in West London, UK. This tower, Grenfell Tower, is a 27-story high-rise residential building.

•The London Fire Brigade responded and has dispatched 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters to the tower in an attempt to control the blaze. Metropolitan Police say that evacuations are under way, however, there are concerns that the tower may collapse under the immense fire that spans the entirety of the building's height, from 2nd to 27th floor according to the London Fire Brigade. Additionally, the London Ambulance Service has sent over 20 ambulance crews to the scene.

Tower reportedly had 1000 people in it, witnesses say people were jumping.

Shouldn't it have fallen down already? 9/11 proved even just a few floors can take a modern building down after all.

This is going to be bad, really bad.
Death toll will be high.

Best wishes London.

The fluted concrete exterior of the building was recently re-clad with insulation sandwiched between the original and new cladding. The insulation caught fire and was able to spread quickly due to the gaps created by the fluting. Fucking genius. Heads are going to roll. Also water supplies within the building were not available to firefighters.
Local residents have been complaining about the fire risks and are now saying that the estate was being deliberately run down as a prelude to demolition in order to ''gentrify'' the area.

Reason number one I would not live in a high rise.

Not since 1996 when it was taken over by Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation.

Kensington and Chelsea TMO is the largest tenant management organisation in England, running nearly 10,000 properties on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea - the entire council housing stock.

The TMO was set up on 1 April 1996[1] under the UK Government's 'Right to Manage' regulations.[2] Kensington and Chelsea TMO is the largest TMO in the UK[3] and is unique in being both the only TMO that runs the entire housing stock for the local council but also in being the only TMO that is also an ALMO (Arms Length Management Organisation)
Grenfell Action Group, the block's tenant organisation, had repeatedly warned of major fire safety lapses since 2013. A blog entry posted in November 20, 2016[8] calling KCTMO "an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia" and predicting that only a "catastrophic event" leading to "serious loss of life" such as "a serious fire in a tower block" would result in change.

I've seen reports saying only 6 dead, it seemed like it could have been much, much worse.

6 dead found so far. The death toll is expected to rise. Apparently a lot of people were awake due to Ramadan. The muslims warned the other residents who got out in time. A lot of speculations though.
