That's not a small part of it. Another part of it is having been an oppressed minority for a couple of thousand years makes you somewhat empathetic to other downtrodden people when the bigots get up on their hind legs. Jews were big players in the 50's and 60's civil rights movement. Also, remember the majority of American Jews are descendants of early 20ths century immigrants who got here without a pot to piss in and became workers in the Gilded Age exploitative power structure. They knew who had and who did not, and why.

I guess the big difference between them and the many other European immigrants of the period was they were literate and sometimes actually educated. They had the critical thinking from studying Talmud to understand what was going on and why. And they took the side of the worker, often of Socialism. Fast forward, a lot of Jews are prick bankers, lawyers and doctors who could give a crap about social justice and vote straight GOP. My brother is one. But there's enough legacy in the culture that most do not. They find it repugnant voting exclusively in the interest of their own wallets, or to control what people do in their bedrooms or do to their own bodies, and stay with the progressives.
We are only accustomed to dealing with like twenty online personas at a time so when we only have about ten people some people have to be strawmanned in order to advance our same relative go nowhere nonsense positions. -TheReal_ND

As opposed to a bankrupt client state? They're bankrupt because they can't offer bonds, like states do.
What is the point of giving them statehood though? I'm all for cutting them loose entirely, should have been done a long time ago. I don't see what value they add to our country atm. I don't think they will get statehood, but if they did, nothing good would come out of it.
No point, I suppose, but it expands our territory and resources. Pretty much the point of any empire.
PR is ridiculously irresponsible with money like most Latin American countries, which is my biggest concern. We have been bailing out shittily run cities and corporations a lot lately. The last thing we need is more of that in my opinion. I'm not sure how most Puerto Ricans feel about the idea of statehood. There is very little chance of it actually happening unless our government is truly retarded.

Tldr, even when not practicing they identify as an out group to WASP's and no small number of them would love nothing more than to destroy them.

Yes, they must learn how to be actually responsible with money, like our docile representatives in D.C. before they could ever hope to come to the big kids' table.

Well, that's baked into the cake. When PR goes up in smoke, they are going to move to the states (Florida and New York, mostly).
Another reason why I don't want them to become a state. We already have enough unskilled workers in this state, and retail and tourism shit is about all we offer job wise. I think we should cut all ties to the island and let the chips fall where they may. If they are too stupid to run their own country properly, they certainly will serve no value as a part of the US.

Maybe Rico should have a referendum on becoming part of Venezuela. Birds of a feather.

I'm not opposed to Puerto Rico becoming a state, although I do think this is bad timing for them. Asking to become a state just after filing for bankruptcy is about the worst timing possible.

And also the current sentiment towards Spanish speakers (Puerto Rico's main language is Spanish. I wonder if there will be someone demanding that they speak English or not?).
I imagine you would start to see a movement push for English to be the official language of government, by which I mean every federal representative has to be able to speak English fluently.

There was already a movement a while back to make English the official language and also a semi-backlash towards anyone who wanted to advertise in Spanish.
