Justin Trudeau asks Pope for apology

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a request for Pope Francis: say sorry for the role of the Catholic Church in a Canadian school system where indigenous children were abused.

The PM met the pontiff at the Vatican on Monday as part of his trip to Italy for the G7 summit.

The residential schools were set up from the 1880s to take children from their families and assimilate them into mainstream Canadian society.
The last one closed in 1996.

Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission has called for a papal apology, as part of the healing process for survivors. Some 150,000 aboriginal children were forcibly removed some from their families, and sent to live in church-run boarding schools where they were forbidden to speak their language or practise their own culture.

Although details of Mr Trudeau's private audience have not been made public, the Vatican confirmed the talk was "cordial" and lasted about 36 minutes. . . .

The pope could easily spend the rest of his tenure apologizing for the "mistakes" of the Catholic church over the centuries. Should be fun to watch the rest of the world line up for an apology.

It's that first sentence that tickles me.

Let me bold the most head-scratcher-iffic part.

The Pope is apologizing to Canada for what, again?
For what transpired in the Canadian school system?

Trudeau is just mad that other folks don't say sorry as often as the average Canadian does and he's grandstanding about it.

Certainly not compared to 98% of the human, near-starvation level experience, eh?

Maybe only gruesome in the estimation of the useless fops that inhabit that Northern real estate now?


Or did I miss something? I'm no scholar on Canadian Catholic schooling. Did they eat kids? Dismember them? Burn them in wicker people? Take those children tall enough to "pisseth against the wall" and dash their brains out?
Could be my lack of knowledge on the subject is what has me skeptical.
