Ah yes, riots. And riot police.

During the good 'ol days of the 1980's you could watch the Apartheid-era South African
police everyday in action.

Of course, against demonstrators, the real thing would simply be the Soviet Army. If you would have a time-capsule and to deter a riot you wouldn't have the water cannons of today, but the T-54s and T-34s of the Red Army. No nonsense!

Actually Interesting that in this clip you can see just how much in 1968 the Soviet Army still looked like the Red Army of WW2. And example of crowd control with a tank. Yep, you can easily move a mass of people with a tank.

More from the earlier example from 1956. Note that not much true filming of the Soviet tanks... as they likely opened fire.

The Ottoman turks are absolutely not the Byzantine Empire. In 1453, Mehmet II sieged and took over Constantinople, putting an end to the Eastern Roman Empire. That would be like saying that United States Congress=Iriquois Confederation. Lot of bad history right there lol...

If I were president, Erdogan would meet me in my office with paintings like this on the wall.

Plasan Sand Cat, modified for Swedish police by Eurolans.
What are you talking about? That'd be great for crowd control... 40mph right into the crowd.

Trying to control a crowd/mob without the real option of using actual force is a pointless effort OTOH. If they're gonna stand there with shield and helmets and let people beat on them (and each other) then they aren't really controlling much.

You've hit upon it. The only--the ONLY--stock in trade the state has is violence.

And the threat of violence, or fines/jail.
