American protestors have been known to get real physical, but usually a political protest of national leaders is expected to be peaceful. More or less.

No, the Osman Turks were the mercenary Steppe-Nomadic cavalry of the Abbasid Caliphate brought from what is now Turkemenistan in Central Asia, they aren't the Byzantines, they displaced the Byzantines, in a series of annexations in the 15th century.
