You can apply the Lolberg "wasteful!" bugaboo to almost anything the Pentagon does, America itself is a big waste of time and money, but that's the whole point of America, it's a mechanism, for spreading the pork around, better to spend it on aircraft carriers than to just hand that money over to the Negroes, nobody wants that.

First, their speed allows them to outrun many other ships, particularly submarines.

They have "hundreds of watertight compartments and thousands of tons of armor, no conventional torpedo or mine is likely to cause serious damage."

The carriers also have high-tech sensors that can pick up missiles at great distances. To counter missiles they have "radar-guided missiles and 20 mm Gatling guns that shoot 50 rounds per second."

Nothing in this article addresses the issue of a fishing boat towing a nuclear mine.

Short of a direct hit, which would be very difficult considering the layered above water defenses, an aicraft carrier could actually withstand all but the most extreme nuclear blasts, if it ain't Castle Bravo, then the outside might get singed, but below decks, the crew would survive and the hull would not sink, in order to reliably sink a warship with a nuke, you need an underwater detonation, because it's not the nuke which sinks the ship, the nuke creates a solid wall of water which rips the bottom out, it's the water that does the sinking, not the nuke itself.

And before you say "just use a submarine", in order to sink a carrier with a submarine, you have to get in close, and the only way to really do it, is to sit on the bottom and lie in wait, you can't torpedo a carrier from stand off range, because torpedoes can either be set to go fast and short, or slow and long, if you launch slow and long, the carrier will just turn away and go to flank, and it will outrun the torpedo, so fast and short is the only way to do it, but you can't do that with a nuke, without blowing yourself up too.

Hence, the best way to nuke a carrier, would be by remote control, underwater detonation, from an assymetrical platform, which could get close without having to evade detection by sonar, but rather by hiding in plain sight.

1) Achieve air dominance over the patch of ocean in which the carrier fleet is located. If you could cause enough damage to the deck, they ain't launching planes for a while.
